Hey Squad 👋

I’m deep in planning for 2026 this week. 🚀

In the next year, I have high hopes for growing Remote Squad into a thriving community – with a Slack group, events and more. 🎉 I’m also in the early stages of ideating a mindfulness app. And I have a book that’s around 70% complete.

Suffice to say, I have a lot of ideas and projects in the making and that means productivity is front-of-mind. 🧠

When I left the 9-to-5, I noticed how much more productive I could be without the office distractions.

Working remotely means I can tune out all the noise, decide which task I'm going to tackle, and work deeply on it for hours at a time. 🤓

The result? Increased focus, greater depth on tasks, and a significantly faster workflow. 📈

That's why the theme of this week's newsletter is all around productivity - how remote workers can harness it and excel beyond inherently distracting offices.

Remote work news 🧠

There’s really only one way to be more productive 🚀

The world is obsessed with productivity. And productivity tools are swamping us.

It’s been said that mid-size enterprises now use 40-60 productivity tools. Imagine the onboarding time and task switching between the tools that are supposed to make us more efficient.

No wonder so many of us find being in the office so distracting. 🫠

Productivity is actually super simple

You don’t need tools for it.

You don’t need complicated formulas.

You don’t need to learn physics or start working from a cabin in the woods (unless that’s something you want to do).

The office will tell you you need to be on live chat with your team. That you need to hop on to the next collaboration tool. That you must join this 40-minute meeting just when you’re getting into the meat of your tasks. You don’t. And every notification will only slow you down.

Here's the truth 🔥

  • You create complex spreadsheets to manage deadlines, but spend more time updating the spreadsheet than you will actually completing the project.

  • You think you need to answer emails within the hour, but obsessive email checking is the reason you’re so unproductive.

  • You use social media as a break from work. Doing so only clutters your mind rendering you almost ineffective.

  • Your software sends you alerts to keep you productive. You actually find those alerts highly distracting.

  • You adopt a highly-collaborate software to keep everyone on the same page. You spend more time onboarding the team than using the software.

Don’t get me wrong. There are useful productivity tools.

I use Trello to track all client work.

I use Google Docs so I can collaborate on content quickly.

But that’s not what makes me productive.

I’m highly-productive because I do one simple thing:

I focus on one task at a time 🤩

This is all you need to know about productivity.

Apply all the methods you like. Read all the books you like. Start a Youtube channel about productivity if you must. But if you can’t do this, you’ll never be productive.

When I’m writing an article, I’m writing an article.

I’m not checking my emails. I’m not chatting with the person next to me in the cafe. I’m not checking my phone for messages. I’m logged out of Slack. I’m not on Trello or any other software. I’m right here writing.

Sure, time blocking is effective. Doing fewer tasks is helpful. Setting shorter deadlines is highly useful.

But there’s really only one thing that makes you more productive.

The way to get everything done is to get one thing done.
