Hey Squad, 👋

Last week I was in Vanuatu. While it was mostly a holiday, I still opened my laptop and got some work done including shipping last week’s newsletter! 💌🌴

It still blows my mind that you can work from basically anywhere in the world. Some of you are here because you work from home, some you would love more work flexibility, and others are fully-fledged nomads.

I think of myself somewhere at the intersection of all. I work from home (on the Gold Coast) but I was previously a digital nomad, and I still work from various places when I do travel. 😄

Regardless of why you’re here, my passion is helping people work where they want to. If that’s a hybrid approach to work. Great. If that’s moving countries every month. Awesome. If that’s working from home full-time. I support it! 🤙

Something that I think we’re often afraid to do, is give ourselves permission to do the things we want to. Yes, so much depends on the company we work for and access to remote jobs. But there’s still a huge element that’s up to us. I explain more below.

Hope you enjoy it! 🌴

Meet Sarah Cheesman: Thriving while WFH 🙌

Before shifting to working remote, Sarah was full-time at a tax services company. While the office was a handy 15-minute trip from her home, there was absolutely no tolerance for working from home. 🫠

I remember the CEO saying, "If you're not at work, you're not working".

Now, Sarah’s gained freedom and flexibility. As a freelance copywriter / content strategist, she’s worked from her spare room for the past five and a half years. 😄

After finding the office highly-distracting, she’s now able to deeply focus on work, while having a positive work-life balance.

I honestly don't miss a thing about being in an office. Yes, we got free breakfast on a Friday, but now I can sort my laundry when I get a free moment, pop out to the shops… whatever I fancy really.

Sarah believes that while offices can be beneficial socially, that element didn’t help her career. Now she has the opportunity to do work on her own terms.

It's completely changed my relationship with work, and my overall happiness.

I just have a belief that most people want to get good results, but not everyone works well in the same environment. If someone works better in the comfort of their home, you're going to get more out of them by allowing that to happen. It's a no-brainer to me.

At Remote Squad, we couldn’t agree more! 😄

You don’t need permission to live the life you want 💡

Most of us seem to have missed the memo. Either that, or we’ve forgotten as we’ve grown up.

The truth is: your life belongs to you.

You’re here to live a wonderful, joy-filled life of the things that you love.

You don’t always need permission to do the things you want to

Yet most of us fall into a trap of living life for everyone else.

This is why creative people often fall into boring office jobs. Why singers wind up working in cafes. And why you might be living a life that doesn’t inspire you.

Life isn’t supposed to be like that.

You have unique talents for a reason

Your differences are what make you interesting.

The reason that you may feel as though you don't fit a cookie-cutter life is that you didn’t come out of a cookie-cutter.

You have life experiences, passions, interests, talents, curiosities, and so much more.

We all have something unique to offer the world. You have life experiences, passions, interests, talents, curiosities, and so much more.

Holding those talents back doesn’t just harm us, it holds the rest of the world back too.

The truth is, you can give yourself permission.

And when you do, you’ll begin to forge your own path of wonderful and interesting things.

That might just mean spending more time doing what you love. Painting on your weekends. Surfing in the mornings.

Or it might mean quitting your job entirely (like I did in 2019).

There’s no right or wrong and only you know what you need to give yourself permission to do.

Here’s your permission slip

In case you need it, here's your permission slip to live your best life.

Here’s your permission to:

  • Feel happy

  • Do what you love

  • Forgive yourself

  • Stop hanging out with people who don’t serve you

  • Ask your boss if you can WFH

  • Quit your job and start your own gig 🤙

Now that you have permission, what will you do with this one wonderful life?
